Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail

Hello everyone! This is a friendly reminder that any of these fun places we may visit, we are a guest at. Please treat both businesses and trails with the utmost respect. We here at Hidden California follow the 'Leave no Trace' mantra, meaning whatever you bring with you comes back with you. If you see trash on a trail, please do your part to help remove it. Remember, we are not picking up trash from another person but instead cleaning up for Mother Nature. Happy adventures!

About the Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail

Note: No permit is required to hike this trail, but any vehicle parked in Humber Park will need a National Forest Adventure Pass

The Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail in Idyllwild is an easy hike with slight elevation gain.  It will take you through pine and oak trees and greet you with pristine views which include Tahquitz/Suicide Rock!  The trail is named after Ernie Maxwell, the founder of the Idyllwild Town Crier.

While you’re in the area, make sure to visit Downtown Idyllwild!

Maxwell is said to have been an advocate for the outdoors and wanted a horse trail which led from Idyllwild to Humber Park.  He finally got his trail.

Personal Experience: This is an easy hike in my opinion and is mostly flat the entire time.  There will be pockets along the way which offer views for as far as the eye can see. The air is so fresh and the trees mighty!  This is a great trail for beginners as many of the other trails in Idyllwild are far more strenuous.
