Mozumdar Temple

Hello everyone! This is a friendly reminder that any of these fun places we may visit, we are a guest at. Please treat both businesses and trails with the utmost respect. We here at Hidden California follow the 'Leave no Trace' mantra, meaning whatever you bring with you comes back with you. If you see trash on a trail, please do your part to help remove it. Remember, we are not picking up trash from another person but instead cleaning up for Mother Nature. Happy adventures!

About Mozumdar Temple

The Mozumdar Temple was once owned by an Indian-born spiritual leader Akhay Kumar Mozumdar.  Mozumdar, whose name means “Son of God” was born in 1864 in India.  He was once a powerful teacher, lecturer, and writer of the New Thought Movement in the U.S. in the early to mid 1900’s.

In 1928, Mozumdar was granted U.S. citizenship rights.  He was able to convince the Spokane district judge that he was Caucasian and met the laws to be a citizen.  He ended up losing citizenship 10 years later but  was able to skirt the law through the 1946 Luce-Celler Act which provided 100 Indians to immigrate into the U.S.  Because of this, he was able to live out the rest of his life in the U.S.

Mozumdar was a beloved spiritual teacher by many and whose qualities were compared to Ghandi.  He was admired for both his humility and confidence. It was his dream to build a temple where people of all religious faiths could come together and worship and so the Mozumdar Temple, also known as Moonies Temple, was built.

Unfortunately the temple was not completed before his death.  After his death the property was sold to the YMCA and then to the Unification church of Rev. Sun Myung Moon.

Mozumdar was said to have rubbed shoulders occasionally with Dr. Atkinson who lived at Satan’s Castle.  Check out the crazy story on Satan’s Castle here.

Although this property is no trespassing, tours are occasionally given by the local historical society.  You can easily see the temple from the road above and snatch some nice photos regardless though.
