Hello everyone! This is a friendly reminder that any of these fun places we may visit, we are a guest at. Please treat both businesses and trails with the utmost respect. We here at Hidden California follow the 'Leave no Trace' mantra, meaning whatever you bring with you comes back with you. If you see trash on a trail, please do your part to help remove it. Remember, we are not picking up trash from another person but instead cleaning up for Mother Nature. Happy adventures!
About Kaleidoscope Desert
By far one of the most interesting Airbnb’s AND animal experiences I have ever visited is now Kaleidoscope Desert in Morongo Valley. Imagine an art-filled wonderland tucked away just outside Joshua Tree. Add in a beautiful natural pool with a back-drop of the San Jacinto Mountains.
Now include exotic animals roaming about such as zebras, emus, ponies, peacocks and a ton of other animals. That just begins the description of what this place is.
The nights are peaceful and star-filled, with coyotes calling in the distance and desert critters rustling through the brush. It’s a place where people come to reconnect with themselves, inspired by fiery sunsets and the raw beauty of the high desert.
We got the opportunity to stay in their ‘Floating Container’ listing which comes with a spacious patio, queen-sized bed, kitchenette, small dining space and bathroom. It was the perfect, quaint size. Kaleidoscope Desert is a unique nonprofit sanctuary where animals, art, and nature come together in harmony. If you don’t want to actually sleep here, visitors are invited on guided tours of the sanctuary, where they can meet a variety of rescued animals—from zebras and emus to mini cows, peacocks, tortoises, and more.
The experience ends in a cozy back pen where guests can spend time cuddling with many of the animals.
Kaleidoscope Desert isn’t just a sanctuary—it’s a vision for healing and sustainable living. It serves as a refuge for both animals and people, offering a space to recharge and reconnect.
While in the area make sure to visit the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Art Museum!
Donations help support the care of rescued animals, the work of local artists, and the preservation of this magical desert retreat. The property is open to guests age 16 and above.
I highly recommend staying a night to get the full experience. There is so much magic in taking your time here and also spending a magical, star-filled night on the property.
They have teamed up with so many talented artists such as Bunnie Reiss and Shrine On. This is a one-of-a-kind experience.
All animals are rescues, many with very sad stories. The zebra was rescued from an auction in Texas for instance. There are also guinea pigs that were used in laboratories for testing.
Please keep their trauma in mind while visiting and make sure to give them plenty of space if they are signing that they need that.
I was absolutely in love with this sweet turkey, Charlie.
We got to meet baby emus!
